Welcome! As an instructor of the piano, violin, and voice, I am excited you have shown interest in learning more about the wonderful world of music. This information will answer your questions concerning how this studio works. If you would like to contact me, feel free to email or call.
About the Instructor:
I hold a Master of Music degree from the University of Alabama (May 2007) and am currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance. In 2004, I received my Bachelor of the Arts degree from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. My coursework has included instruction in pedagogy (the technique of teaching) and music performance as well as focused studies and research in the area of music history and theory. I have served as camp counselor and faculty member of Summer Piano Camps for pre-college students in recent years.
I am currently serving as a faculty member in the Music Department of Faulkner University teaching both class piano and private lessons. I also teach at Huntingdon College and the Academy of Performing Arts where I teach private piano and violin. My students are encouraged to perform publicly and enter music festivals, where they consistently receive high ratings.
I have also performed as a violinist with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra and enjoy playing for weddings and special events. Singing since the age of eight, I am heavily involved in church choral and solo music. I have received training at the college and graduate level in both violin and voice. This is my ninth year as a private music instructor.
Lesson Materials and Preparation:
Students will be instructed in piano/violin/voice techniques, music history, theory, and ear training. The appropriate instructional materials will be selected according to the student’s level. Each pupil is expected to purchase their books as soon as they are assigned and bring them to the NEXT lesson. Students are to report to each lesson having completed their practice time and/or written assignments
Please Bring to Every Lesson:
1) Completed Practice Record stating the amount of time practiced and pieces practiced.
2) 3-Ring Notebook to place supplemental written assignments, practice records, and handouts.
3) A Recording Device to keep up with assignments and musical demonstrations is highly encouraged.
Lesson Attendance:
It is the student’s responsibility to come prepared to all scheduled lessons. Not all missed lessons qualify to receive a make-up time. Make-up lessons are only given in the event of an extreme, unavoidable emergency. Homework, sports, and/or personal conflicts do not constitute an emergency. If you must be absent contact the instructor as soon as possible. Students will be charged for unexcused absent/missed lessons. If an excused absence occurs, the instructor is only obligated to provide one makeup lesson time. If the student does not come at that time, he/she will forfeit their makeup lesson.
Practice Requirements:
Students are expected to practice five to six days a week. Without daily practice it is impossible for the student to progress at a satisfactory speed. The amount of time spent rehearsing will vary according to the level of expertise. Beginning students are required a minimum of 20-30 minutes per day, intermediate students at least 45 minutes to 1 hour and advanced students 2-3 hours a day.
Recitals:
Students will be required to participate in 2-3 recitals a year, usually in the spring and winter. A formal recital is presented at Faulkner University and will take the place of the weekly lesson. The week before that performance is dedicated to recital preparation. All students will meet in the Faulkner music hall to practice their pieces and recital etiquette in lieu of their weekly private lesson. Pre-college age students are required to participate in local music festivals and competitions as they become qualified to enter.
Parents (If Applicable):
Parental involvement is extremely crucial for pre-college age students, especially very young children. Parents must sign a weekly practice record confirming their child’s practice time. Practice Records will not be accepted without a parent’s signature. It is suggested that the parent(s) review the lesson assignment with their child in their music notebook/textbooks each week. Listening to professional music groups and solo artists of different genres is important to student development. Please make every effort to attend such community events with your child.
Group Lessons:
Lessons in this venue focus on training in specific areas in which a group setting is beneficial. This hour-long session also provides an opportunity for students to perform for each other and gain experience. Group Lessons are scheduled at the discretion of the teacher.
Your Decision:
As a student you must be dedicated to music. Scattered practicing, occasional lessons, and little commitment will never allow you to become the musician you desire. With this in mind, I do reserve the right to dismiss students if they show a consistent disregard for the guidelines of this studio. Making a decision to pursue music will require an investment of your time and finances, but let me assure you that it is well worth it! You will receive personal joy and fulfillment as well as the opportunity to enrich the lives of others. I look forward to helping you reach your musical goals.
